Fun Makeup Look for Summer – Feat. The Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette

Ain’t no doubt about it, summer is fun. The warm weather makes people happy and the good times roll well into those long summer night. In general, I don’t believe in only wearing certain colours in certain seasons, but summertime has given me the urge to be colourful. So I thought I’d use the completely stunning Gwen Stefani X Urban Decay eyeshadow palette to create a fun makeup look with a splash of colour. Without further ado, let’s get started.

The Base

For the base I was aiming for one thing – glowy af. Tbh, this is what I aim for daily, and in life in general, but for this look in particular I wanted that dewy like a fairy kinda glow.

To achieve this I used the NYX Angel Veil primer, to hydrate my skin (especially important when you’ve spent time in the sun) and help with longevity. For foundation I used the L’Oreal Nude Magique cushion foundation in shade Vanilla. Under my eyes I used my everyday favourite concealer, Benefit’s Fake Up in Light. I then lightly powdered my t-zone and under my eyes with Revlon Colorstay pressed powder in Light – this helped to keep my concealer in place and stops me from slipping from glowy to oily.

The Face

If you haven’t got the idea yet, we’re going for glowy. To keep this going, I used the Soap & Glory Solar Powder. This is technically supposed to be a bronzer/highlighter duo but I love to blend the two together as a very lightly shimmered bronzer. For blush I used my ride or die, Luminoso baked blush by Milani followed by a beautiful natural highlight using the Soap & Glory Glow All Out luminising face powder. This is a pinky highlight that is just so subtle and pretty, the perfect ‘glowing from within’ highlight.

The Brows

For brows I used the NYX micro brow pencil in brunette. I wanted my brows to balance out the brighter eye look we’ve got coming up. I love a full bushy brow – so that’s what I went for.

The Eyes

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the beautiful Gwen Stefani x Urban Decay eyeshadow palette. Wow. This palette honestly shocked me with the quality; I was speechless when I swatched this in Mecca. The colour range is beautiful, that blue in particular slays me.

For this summery look I decided to play with the pink shade in the palette, Harajuku, and create a wearable yet bright (totally a thing) look. First I used the shade Stark from lash line to crease to balance out my eyelids and create a smooth base for the rest of the shades. I then used Blonde on my brow bone and Annaheim through and slightly above my crease to create some light depth and a blending point for the rest of the colours. Next up is Zone which I used directly in my crease to deepen things up and create a gradient effect through to Annaheim. To deepen my outer corners I used Blink on a more defined brush and then, with a clean fluffy blending brush, I smoked out the edges so there were no harsh lines. Here comes the fun bit – Harajuku! Using a more precise brush I popped this on the inner two thirds of my eye and, with the same clean blending brush from earlier, I softly blended Blink and Harajuku together to create an effortless gradient. To top it all off, and add a little more glow cause we all know we need it, I added Pop to my inner corners and coated my lashes generously in the Essence I Love Lashes Mascara to finish every thing off. Ta Da!

The Lips

To finish this look off, I tossed up whether to go nude and balance the eye or just commit and go bright. In the end I compromised and went for a muted pink. I used a Rimmel 1000 Kisses lip liner in Natural to both line and fill in the lips. Over the top I used a true favourite of mine, Shanghai Suzy’s Dusty Rose. This lipstick gives me life, such a gorgeous pinky nude.

And there you have it! A bit of a fun look for summer nights, and to match those gorgeous sunsets. What’s your favourite kind of look for summer? Let me know in the comments below!

If you’re in the southern hemisphere I hope you are enjoying your summer!

REVIEW: Nude Magique Cushion Foundation by L’Oreal Paris

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. A lightweight, glowy foundation is my ultimate makeup dream. I spend my days searching for my Holy Grail foundation, and when I find it I keep on looking… just in case. So when L’Oreal brought out with a different version of one of my very favourite dewy-finish foundations, I had to jump on that bandwagon asap.

Enter the Nude Magique cusion foundation, boasting a variety of desirable qualities: natural glow finish, fresh and weightless formula, buildable sheer-medium coverage, easy application, and SPF29 sun protection. On paper, it ticks literally all my boxes. So did it meet my expectations?

Short answer? Yes. I love it, it’s fantastic, I look like a naturally glowy princess, well done L’Oreal.

Long answer? Read on.

The Deets

In Australia, this foundation will set you back $29.95 ($20.95 if you get into Priceline quick! It’s on sale atm), which isn’t the cheapest drugstore foundation on the market. Especially considering you get only 14.6g of product. For an extra 5 bucks you can get 30mL of the OG Lumi Magique foundation. So, honestly, it’s not the best value for money, but that’s how cushion foundations roll.

It also has SPF25. Sun protection is always a huge plus for me. However, this does mean that it has a slight flash back in flash photography.

Little side note: there are rumours that they are discontinuing Lumi Magique. Which, if it’s true, it truly heart breaking and I may need some time to recover from such a loss. Having said that, it’s still available on the Priceline website at present. Let’s hope the rumours aren’t true.

The Coverage

Light. I wanted to say light-medium but that’s just not true. It’s light bordering on tinted moisturiser coverage; think Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser and you’re in the same coverage post code as the Nude Magique. Even with two layers it’s still pretty light, heading towards medium. Which is exactly what I love! But if you’re after some serious coverage, this is definitely not going to be your jam.

The downside to this for me is that it means you end up layering up and using even more foundation in a compact that is already seriously lacking volume.

The Application

The little sponge that comes with the foundation compact actually does a pretty good job at applying this foundation! Which is a bit of a shock, really. But my preferred method is to apply is with a beauty sponge.

The Finish

As mentioned above, this baby is dewy. Like DEW-Y. In summertime when it feels a little more acceptable, I may just let the dew do its thing, but most of the time it definitely needs setting with powder. I just set my t-zone (my only slightly oily area) and let the sides of my face glow like a thousand suns. If you’re oily, I’d think twice about giving this foundation a go.

The Longevity

This is the area in which this foundation is lacking. Not that it is particularly surprising given the light coverage. It does still look pretty at the end of a working day, but it has definitely faded from what it was upon application. It won’t take you from day-night without touch-ups or reapplication, which means you need even more foundation out of the small compact. So, yeah longevity is a bit of thumbs down for me.

All in All…

All in all, I can look past the longevity issue. I am not somebody that loves full coverage foundations, so I have learned to live with my makeup not lasting as long to get the lighter more natural look I am after. If you’re after a more hardy version of this foundation you may want to give the Lumi Magique a go, but for me the Nude Magique just trumps it; the finish is just slightly more flattering/less oily looking.

I definitely recommend this foundation for people with dry skin who are looking for a natural, glowy foundation. Give this a go, you won’t be disappointed.

Aussie girls can buy it here.

Review: BYS Nude Eyeshadow Palette

If you’ve seen any of my past drugstore eyeshadow palette reviews you’ll know that I’ve been pretty disappointed by what’s on offer. I’m always willing to try a drugstore product in the hope that it will be a near match/surpass one of my high-end products, but when it comes to eyeshadow I’ve never found anything even close. I’d all but given up, and then I heard a rumour that the BYS Nude palette is a pretty good dupe for the Urban Decay Naked 1 palette, and I gave drugstore eyeshadows one last shot…thank goodness I did.

This palette, guys. I mean, well done, BYS.   I am really impressed and here’s why:

IMG_0009_2

Price

This bad boy will set you back a whopping AU$19.95, and it is regularly on sale on different websites for far less than that. I got mine on eBay. Either way, in comparison to the AU$83 you pay for the Urban Decay palette, it’s a trifle.

Colour Range

IMG_0011_2The colour range is great, it comes with 3 matte (style, NYC and couture) and 9 shimmer eyeshadows. I use the mattes on a daily basis, especially ‘Style’ but the shimmers are also gorgeous for special occasions/when I want to feel a little bit more glam. This is also the area in which it is most comparable to the Naked 1. With the exception of UD’s Half Baked (which is replaced by a light matte nude in the BYS palette) the other colours are almost identical.

Quality

IMG_0010_2

You won’t be surprised to hear that the Nude palette doesn’t quite match up to the Naked 1 in quality. Whilst I am seriously impressed by the pigmentation of the BYS shadows (especially the matte colours) they’re no match for the Urban Decay formula. They also don’t blend quite as easily. Having said that, they do still blend very well, especially for shadows in that price point, and if you’re willing to put in a little more effort the results are exactly the same as the Naked 1.

All in all, I seriously love the BYS Nude palette and I am considering investing in the other palettes in the Nude range. If you’re not willing to fork out almost $100 for eyeshadow then give the BYS alternative a go. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Review: BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel Eyeshadow and Highlighter palette.

My beautiful sister, N got me the BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel 14 Colour Eyeshadow and Highlighter Palette for my birthday in June so I thought I would put it to the test and let you all know what I think about it. So, without further ado, here are my thoughts on the palette.

Price:

This palette is so afordable! It costs $14.50USD and you get 10 eyeshadows and 4 highlighters! You do have to pay for shipping but I think all up it cost N around $20… Winner!

Formulation:

Hooly dooly, these are probably the most highly pigmented, buttery and smooth eyeshadows I own aside from my three Makeup Forever shadows! They seriously feel like powdery butter! There’s also hardly any fall out because they are so smooth, meaning you can happily apply your face makeup before doing your eyes without having to worry about an industrial size cleanup. They are super pigmented so you don’t have to use heaps but they aren’t hard to blend out at all which really surprised me when I saw how much shadow I picked up on my brush the first time I used the palette! The highlighters have the exact same, creamy formula too and are a delight to use! There are five matte and five shimmery shades – perfect! A lot of our other palettes tend to be either mostly matte or mostly shimmer so I love that this is perfectly centred! The shimmer shades also aren’t chunky or glittery at all which is always a winner in my books!

 Colour Range:

What I love about this palette is the really catered for a lot of different skin tones, especially with the highlighters! They somehow managed to make four highlighters have the perfect shade range for super light to deep, dark skin tones! The eyeshadows also have a great range of matte transition shades meaning that you will pretty much find your crease shade no matter what skin shade you are.

 Longevity:

This is where things get exciting! I have pretty oily eyelids and my eyeshadows tend to get those gross sweaty blank lines within a few hours normally, especially if I don’t prime my eyes! During my move to Sydney I packed only this palette and completely forgot to pack a primer. I didn’t even know if it was worth wearing the shadows but was going out for breakkie with my cousin one morning at 7am and wanted to look pretty. The next time I looked at my self in the mirror that day was around 8pm (so I had been wearing them for at least 12.5 hours) and MY EYES STILL LOOKED INCREDIBLE! Like I’m talking, freshly applied amazing. These eyeshadows, even though they are super creamy, somehow stay on for hours and hours – probably days if you left them! Winner winner chicken dinner!

 Packaging:

The packaging is definitely a winner for me! Yes it’s big but it’s got 14 powder products in it so that doesn’t bother me! What I love so much is how slim it is! It fits in my toiletry bag so easily even though the actual size of the palette is one of my biggest!

Overall thoughts:

As you can probably tell I absolute love this palette! N and I are actually going to buy another one each for backups haha. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on the market for eyeshadows or highlighters or generally is alive. Buy it now, thank me later.

Stay Happy,

-M xx
