REVIEW: Essano Rosehip Treat Your Skin Pack

As I mentioned in my Biology Skincare review, I am a total sucker for travel-sized packaging.  One of my favourite things about traveling is the cute little mini bottles and and tubs and tubes and it is just so goddam cute! So, of course, when Coles had this Essano pack on sale I snapped that baby up quick smart.
I’ve always wanted to try Essano skincare products out so this seemed like an excellent way to dip my toe. Did the cute packaging come with excellent product inside? Keep reading to find out.

THE PRICE

The 5 pack will set you back AU$24.99. For this price you will get yourself 20mL of body lotion, 20mL of cleanser, 20mL of facial moisturiser, 10g of night cream and 3mL of rosehip oil. Not a bad price all up! So what about the performance…

certified ORGANIC ROSEHIP OIL

Right off the bat, I’m going to tell you a very sad story.  I knocked this little mini bottle and a pretty decent amount of the product poured down the sink. It was heartbreaking. I screamed and my boyfriend thought I’d hurt myself and, to be honest, I kind of did hurt myself. My clumsiness hurt my heart. So I didn’t get to try this full bottle out.

This reminded me why I fell so hard for rosehip oil back in the day.  I really enjoyed this product, I didn’t really get to try it out as most of it went down the drain, but up until that moment I was enjoying it! Hydrating but without leaving my skin oily. I added a drop into the daily moisturiser or pressed it into my skin before applying night cream and it worked really well both ways.

Do I love it as much as the Trilogy Rosehip+? No, but it’s still pretty great.

You can purchase this on its own, 45mL for AU$34.99.

regenerating facial moisturiser

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this product! I normally find moisturisers marketed for daytime use too lightweight and leave my skin feeling undernourished, but this product didn’t do this! A drop of the rosehip oil and my skin felt nourished all day. On its own it wasn’t too bad, but i definitely preferred with a drop of oil.

Will I repurchase? Maybe! It’s not my favourite, but I did enjoy it.

You can purchase this on its own, 140mL for AU$19.99.

night cream

This product was…it was okay, if I’m being kind. I’m not sure if perhaps my pack had just been sitting of the shelf for a long time, but this product felt like it had dried up somehow.  I needed to use a lot of product to cover my whole face and feel hydrated, and even then it felt heavy on the skin. This product just didn’t tickle my fancy, sorry Essano.

On the plus side, it smells like musk sticks and I was into that.

If you want to form your own opinion you can buy this on its own, 50g for AU$19.99.

gentle foaming facial cleanser

The word “foaming” in a cleanser normally has me running for the hills. I have dry skin, I don’t need foam coming on in and drying things up even more.  As such, it was with great hesitancy that I started using this cleanser. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t mind this the results! It worked well on its own or with a small amount of bi-carb as an exfoliator.

You can purchase this on its own, 140mL for AU$14.99.

intensive hydrating body lotion

I’ve left the best ’til last. I was expecting this to be ‘meh’ and leave it at that. I was wrong! This moisturised my poor ol’ dry legs, absorbed into the skin easily (nothing more annoying that being left there rubbing your legs for half an hour before the white streaks disappear) and the moisture levels lasted! The only down side is there just wasn’t enough product. This ran out long before any of the other products did, I mean obviously, my legs are a lot bigger than my face. But I feel like that should be taken into account when sizing is being decided. Other than that, love!

Of all these products, this is the one I can see my self definitely re-purchasing and using on the reg.

You can purchase it on its own, 400mL for AU$16.99.

the verdict

So, would I repurchase this for the next time I travel? I’m going to be honest, probably not. None of the products were terrible (aside from the night cream, that was a thumbs down) but none of them had me jumping for joy (aside from the body lotion). Other travel sized packs have left me feeling a bit more satisfied. That body lotion though, definitely a new favourite there!

Monthly Favourites: May 2017

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation

I recently had a week of prac for uni, and when I was deciding what foundation I was going to wear on my first day my hand instantly reached for this. I wanted a foundation I knew was going to apply well with ease, make me look fresh and last well. I know that this product will consistently give me those results without me having to try too hard.

I apply it with a buffing brush and it leaves me with a healthy well-rested look…when I was actually nervous af and hadn’t slept a wink. This baby performs every time.

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer

This was hiding in the back of my draw and after having rediscovered it…wow! Now I remember why Laura Mercier primers were what got me into primers in the first place! I’m not sure if this helps with longevity but it certainly helps with hydration and application. My foundation applies like a dream, and that perfect application helps my foundation to wear well throughout the day. Imma have to stock up on this one.

Obagi Professional-C Serum 15%

This serum is tres expensive.  Like AU$79.95 for 30mL. I know, my jaw hit the floor too. I was really hoping that this would be terrible and I’d hate it and be able to tell you all to save your dollars.  But, alas, it’s freaking amazing. I apply it in the evening before night cream (making sure to leave it for a minute or so before applying the cream to allow the product to work its way in) and my skin literally (okay not literally) glows in the mornings. I have to check myself out it looks so healthy.  Hydrating af and helps to even out skin tone. And it actually does both of those things, not like other products that just write in on their box.

Benefit Gimme Brow

I don’t have much going on in the brow department.  I really peaked brow-wise in the 90s/00s.  So when I first tried Benefit’s Gimme Brow I really was begging it to gimme some damn brow.  And it does. This baby delivers! It’s not as full on as when I use my MUFE Aqua Brow, but for every day full brows this is my new fave – I much prefer it over the MAC brow set. In fact, I have already bought a backup. I realise I’m late to the party on this, but if you haven’t given this a go I highly recommend it.

I use the shade medium for a natural look.

Urban Decay Naked2 Basics  Eyeshadow Palette

This is not as popular as it’s older sister the OG Naked Basics, but I have a serious soft spot for this travel-sized palette. ‘Skimp’ is my all time favourite eyeshadow shade, which is so boring but it is what it is.  It is a satin finish which makes it perfect for all over my lid without making them look or feel dry. This palette is perfect for travel, you can do an everyday natural look or amp it up for an evening smokey eye, and all in one compact.  Skimp all over my eye, Stark in the crease, maybe a little bit of Frisk or Cover in the outer corner, and I’m set for the day. And they’re UD eyeshadows, so the quality is pretty swell.

If you only want one easy to use eyeshadow palette in your life, I highly recommend this.

MUFE Ultra HD Stick Foundation

My skin has been super dry over the last couple of months. Winter has hit me hard and I’m starting to feel like a scaly dragon with eczema. Because it’s been so dry I haven’t worn much makeup but when I have, the Makeup Forever Ultra HD Stick Foundation has been the only thing that works. It’s super creamy and the coverage can be built from a nice light (yet perfected) coverage right up to a super full, smooth finish. I love, love, love this foundation! I’m in the shade Y225 Marble.

Let us know if you would like a full review.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara

I recently rediscovered this and have fallen back in love all over again! This is hands down my favourite mascara ever! You need it in your life! I’ve done a full review on it here.

The Maze Runner book series by James Dashner

We have been obsessed with this book series over this last month and have even spent days reading to each other Jane Austen style. It’s not quite at The Hunger Games’ standard but it’s super suspenseful and will keep you guessing the whole way through! If you’re looking for an easy, fun book series you should definitely check it out!

N.B. Don’t bother with the movie! It’s awful.

REVIEW: SuperStay 24hr Foundation and Concealer by Maybelline

Everybody and their dog is after foundation and concealer that will keep you looking fresh af from dawn til dusk (or dusk til dawn, if that’s how you roll), so when I came across the Maybelline’s SuperStay 24hr foundation and concealer I had to see if this would end that search.  I’m not sure I’ve ever needed my makeup to last a full 24 hours but the idea that it could if I really wanted it to caught my eye.

Maybelline tells us that the foundation uses “micro-flex technology” (which is 100% a term they made) that helps the product to resist movement throughout the day and,  I would imagine they are implying, help it to last 24 hours.  So did they live up to my lofty expectations? Read on to find out.

THE PACKAGING

I actually quite like the packaging! Whilst the hefty glass bottle of the foundation makes it impractical for travel, it looks sleek and feels of expensive quality. The foundation also comes with a pump, always a huge tick.  The concealer tube is neither here nor there, it’s fine.

As for the labels, something that irritates me about drugstore products is that the labels/writing often wear away from rattling around it my makeup bag or foundation draw.  I have had both of these for quite a while and the labels still look brand new! It’s something small, but I appreciate it.

THE PRICE

This foundation will set you back AU$24.95 for 30mL, and the concealer AU$14.95 for 7.5mL which is by no means the cheapest drugstore foundation on the market.  It is still, however, a far cry from high-end or luxury foundation prices.

THE FINISH

The finish is somewhere between matter and satin, I guess you could call it a “natural” finish, with medium but buildable coverage.  This means you can wear it for every day or amp it up for night time or big events. The concealer is leaning more towards full coverage.

However, this is where the product really lost points for me.  No matter how I applied this it left my skin looking heavy and cakey.

One application with a drop of oil (the best way I found to apply it…still not crazy about it)

The concealer in particular left my under-eyes looking really seriously atrocious.  And it got worse over time! Even when I thought I’d thinned it out with some facial oil and it looked okay initally, it somehow ended up looking like a dry, creased and cakey mess a few hours later.  I was always desperate to take it off when I looked in a mirror and regretted wearing it every single time.

The foundation was pretty similar. Whilst the finish was improved by adding a drop of facial oil, it still looked cakey after a few hours wear.  I tried applying it with my hands, with a beauty sponge, with a brush, with and without a drop of oil, with a finishing spray and without; no matter what I did it just didn’t sit well on my skin.

I do have dry-combination skin, so this may have played a part in this.  If you have oily skin this may work in your favour!

With a full face of makeup – no setting powder as that makes it cake up even more

THE WEAR

The concealer really did last all day long without any movement or diminishing in coverage.  However, as I mentioned for every single one of those hours, it looked cakey and hideous and I was desperate to get home and take it off.  I particularly remember looking in the mirror after work one day and being mortified that I had been walking around looking like a pale, old lady all day.  The creasing was the worst I have ever experienced.

The foundation didn’t last as well as the concealer, but it also wasn’t as cakey as the concealer.  Which says more about how shockingly cakey the concealer was than the finish of the foundation, because it was still pretty heavy.  It ended up leaving my skin looking dull and unhealthy, which is the total opposite of what I was hoping to get from this “24hr fresh look” foundation.

the verdict

Huge, massive thumbs down from me.  I have honestly been avoiding doing this review because I don’t want to put this foundation back on my skin for photos. I just can’t even.  This may be the worst foundation and concealer I have ever used.  I know that sounds super negative and dramatic but that’s how shitty I looked at the end of the day when I wore these. I would honestly prefer my makeup to fade than leave me looking like a cake face as this did.

If you have oily skin, perhaps this won’t be an issue for you. But honestly, I wouldn’t risk it.

Have you tried these products? What were your thoughts? Can you recommend any other long-wearing foundations?

REVIEW: Biology Skincare – Bare Essentials Travel Kit

I love travel kits and travel-sized cosmetics and skincare in general.  They’re fun and cute and so handy! Knowing which of the many travel-ready products on the market are for you can be tricky! So let me take a little of the guess work out of it for you with a review of the Bare Essentials Travel Kit by Biology Skincare.

THE BRAND

Biology is an Australian body and hair care brand that specialises in “naked formulas” free from harmful chemicals and fillers; “it’s not just about what we put in, it’s about what we leave out”.  I am always keen to try out natural products! If I can overhaul my beauty routine completely and go au natural that would be fantastic! So let’s see how these stood up to the task…

THE PACKAGING

First of all, the packaging is just so damn cute.  I love it.  It’s got a olde timey alchemist vibe about it whilst also being fresh and modern.  How a product is going to look sitting in my bathroom is something I look for! Whether that is vain and pathetic or not.

THE PRODUCTS

The travel kit comes with 5 different products, for hair and body, and will set you back AU$50.

No. 301 Pure Hydration Shampoo & No. 302 Pure Hydration Conditioner

These were, I’ll admit, better than I thought they were going to be! My experience with natural shampoo and conditioners hasn’t been great; I’m usually left with dry and limp hair that tangles easily.  These were a pleasant surprise! Were they the best products I’ve ever used on my hair? No.  But they did the job! My Hair was left clean, somewhat hydrated and tangle free.  As an added bonus they smelled amazing!

Repurchase? For travel, sure! You can get the kit on its own for AU$24 here.

No. 303 Moisture Therapy Body Wash

This was kind of a miss for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that it did anything bad, it just didn’t do anything right either.  My skin was clean, which I definitely want from a body wash, but it also felt dry and tight which is never a nice feeling.

Repurchase? I don’t think so. However, if you would like to try it out you can purchase it on its own in a larger form for $27 here.

No. 304 Moisture Therapy Body Lotion

I wasn’t expecting to like this after my experience with the body wash, but this lotion was lovely! It smelled like lemongrass and was so hydrating and soothing.  I ended up keeping it next to my bed to lather myself up of a nighttime, the scent was so calming and it left my skin feeling soft and supple without feeling sticky.  I actually miss it now that it’s gone!

Repurchase? Definitely! I am keen to try more of the lotions and creams from Biology after loving this so much. You can purchase the body lotion is a larger size on its own for AU$29 here.

No. 305 Moisture Therapy Body Bar

This really surprised me with how well it performed! My armpits in particular loved it; gentle exfoliation whilst maintaining moisture levels had my armpits looking straight out of a deoderant ad! I also randomly used it to clean my makeup brushes when i was in a pinch and boy howdy, it cleaned them AMAZINGLY! So quick and kept them soft, move of sold beauty blender cleanser, there’s a new sheriff in town.

Repurchase? Sure! You can purchase it on its own for AU$12 here.

THE CONCLUSION

Is this something I would consider investing in for travel? Yes! It’s lightweight, the products (for the most part) perform really well, and it looks cute af so that’s always a bonus. I definitely recommend this kit, especially if you’re trying to keep your skincare and beauty routine natural.

You can purchase the travel kit here.
