Makeup For Mature Skin

We’ve had a lot of questions about makeup for more mature skin so we decided to recruit our beautiful mum to help us give you some tips and tricks on how to best apply makeup to mature skin.

The Prep:

Our mum, like many other woman her age, has quite dehydrated skin. Her main concern is makeup becoming cakey around her smile lines which can be common if you don’t apply the right base. The best thing we have found to do before applying mum’s (or anyone with dry skin) base is to prep it with a facial spray. Our favourite (and one of the cheapest around too) is the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and RosewaterWe sprayed a generous amount over mum’s skin and let that settle in before we applied the Hourglass No. 28 Serum Primer with a Beauty Blender. This primer is absolutely incredible for priming dry or dehydrated skin! It is so nourishing and hydrating and we have found that it keeps our skin looking fresher for longer!

The Base:

Mum’s new favourite foundation is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Liquid To Go Compact and for good reason! It is so hydrating (again, essential for aged skin) and has excellent coverage while still looking like skin. Then we used the By Terry Terrybly Densiliss Concealer  under her eyes to cancel out any darker pigmentation. Something important to remember with concealer and mature skin is to use a concealer that is only one shade lighter than your skin tone as anything lighter will make you looked aged. As you can see above, we used the same shade as we would on the rest of mum’s face here under her eyes and she looks absolutely stunning! We blended all of that in with the Beauty Blender again. Mum’s skin becomes too dry if she sets it with powder and she finds that she doesn’t need to set it for it to stay all day (especially with this foundation/primer combination) but if you do find that you need to set your face we would recommend the Face of Australia Translucent Powder used with a beauty blender is an amazing combination for keeping the skin still looking like skin.

The Cheeks:

Like the base, glowing cheeks tend to look the nicest with mature skin so we used mum’s favourite the NARS Laguna Orgasm Duo  which is a bronzer/blush duo. The bronzer has a beautiful golden sheen and the blush has gentle gold reflects in it. The combination looks amazing on the cheeks. To aid in illumination we used the Benefit Watt’s Up! Cream Highlighter stick on the top of her cheek bones, cupids bow and down her nose. Something to keep in mind with anything that has a reflect in it is to use it sparsely on any areas you have textural problems as this will highlight those problems even more. If you do have issues we recommend using a matte blush and bronzer and even a matte powder that is a few shades lighter than your skin tone as a highlighter to give your face dimension.

The Brows:

Mum already has beautiful brows so we just ran over Benefit’s Gimme Brow Brow Gel to give them more volume and texture.

The Eyes:

Mum, like us, has pretty hooded eyes so we try to keep the drama along the lash line for her eyes. We used the Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eyeshadow Primer to make the shadow last and used the centre shade in the Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude Eyeshadow Palette  to set that from lash line to brow bone. Then we used the second shade from the left in the palette in the crease to create a little bit of definition and along the lower lash line for a bit of symmetry. Then, using the darkest brown shade in the palette, we created a bit of depth along the last line with a soft, smudged line and did the same thing along the outer 3rd of the lower lashes. To bring a bit of sparkle to the eyes we used the sparkly shade in the Bobbi Brown Sunkissed Eyeshadow Palette in Nude in the very centre of her lid. To brighten up here eyes and make them appear more awake we used the NARS Larger Than Life Eyeliner in shade Rue Bonaparte in the water line. This is a great way of looking more awake even on days where you aren’t wearing any makeup. Mum suffers from “panda eyes” where her mascara smudges throughout the day and her new favourite mascara, Kevin Aucoin The Curling Mascarais her new holy grail at stopping that!

The Lips:

If you suffer from lines in your lips one of the most important things is to not use a matte lipstick as this, like the skin, will accentuate the lines. For today’s look we used MAC’s Brave Lipstick  which is a satin shade so it lasts a long time but is still hydrating and flattering on the lips.

We hope this has helped those of you who wanted a few tips and tricks on how to work with mature skin!

Makeup Look: Too Faced Sweet Peach palette Winter Look

IMG_0021

It’s no secret that our Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette is one of our all time favourite eyeshadow palettes so when Too Faced came out with the Sweet Peach palette in the same format we jumped on it! It has the most glorious warm tones and a great amount of mattes and shimmers!

My favourite look for winter time with this palette is a warm smokey eye and warm nude lips. So let’s jump straight in to it!

The base:

IMG_0028

First I used my Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation (shade Fair Sand) with my Zoeva Silk Finish brush to create an absolutely stunning airbrushed effect! Then to cover my under eye circles I used my Laura Mercier Secret Concealer (shade 2) and blended that in with my fingers. On top of that I used my Kat Vond D Lock-It Concealer (shade Light 16) to lighten things up and also to cover any spots I had. To set all of that I used my Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Powder on my T-Zone and under my eyes using Zoeva’s Powder brush.

The Cheeks:

To add dimension back to my face I used my The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer under my cheek bones, under my jawline, along my hairline and in my temples with my Zoeva Luxe Highight brush. Then, to add warmth and blend out my contour I used my new (and amazing) Too Faced Sweet Tea Baked Bronzer through the places I had already contoured with Zoeva’s Powder Brush. For blush I used my new favourite, Becca’s Mineral Blush in Flower Child with my Zoeva Luxe Sheer Cheek brush. To finish off my cheeks I swept Becca X Jaclyn Hill’s Shimmering Skin Perfecter Pressed in Champagne Pop along my cheekbones, cupids bow, nose and eyebrow bones.

The Eyebrows:

Hallelujah! How much better does everything look when your brows done?! For my brows I used my all time favourite brow product, Tarte’s Amazonion Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse in Medium Brown and the brush provided to carve out my brows and then Nars’ clear Brow Gel to set them in to place. To highlight my brow bone I used Benefit’s High Brow.

The Eyes:

To Prime my eyes I used Mac’s Prep and Prime 24Hr Extend Eye base and blended it in with my fingers. To set that I used Peaches ‘N Cream all over my eyelids on Zoeva’s Luxe Crease brush. Then, using Zoeva’s Luxe Petit Crease brush, I ran Puree just above my crease to create depth. I constantly blended with the Luxe Crease brush to diffuse the edges. I also ran Puree under my eyes with the same Petit Crease brush and joined it with the outer part of my eyeshadow on the top lid. I blended Summer Yum on the outer corner of my top and bottom lid with the Petit Crease brush to deapen the look up and add more depth and warmth. Then, using one side of the Cream Shader brush by Zoeva, I patted Caramelized on to the outer 2/3 of my mobile lid and lower lash line, using the other side of the same brush I then put Luscious on the inner 1/3. To finish the eyeshadows up I used Zoeva’s Luxe Pencil brush to put White Peach on the inner corner and along my brow bone. I then lined my upper water line and the outer 2/3 of my lower water line with Maybelline’s Color Show Crayon Kohl Eyeliner in Chocolate Chip and then finished off my eyes with the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara.

The Lips:

IMG_0033

Because the Sweet Peach palette is so warm toned I wanted to create a nice warm toned, nude lip. To create this I used Chi Chi’s Stay on Lip Liner in It Girl to line and fill in my lips and then used Rimmel’s Apocalips Lip Velvet in Atomic Rose.

So there you have it! My Winter Too Faced Sweet Peach palette look. What do you think? Do you think you’ll recreate it?

Review: BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel Eyeshadow and Highlighter palette.

My beautiful sister, N got me the BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel 14 Colour Eyeshadow and Highlighter Palette for my birthday in June so I thought I would put it to the test and let you all know what I think about it. So, without further ado, here are my thoughts on the palette.

Price:

This palette is so afordable! It costs $14.50USD and you get 10 eyeshadows and 4 highlighters! You do have to pay for shipping but I think all up it cost N around $20… Winner!

Formulation:

Hooly dooly, these are probably the most highly pigmented, buttery and smooth eyeshadows I own aside from my three Makeup Forever shadows! They seriously feel like powdery butter! There’s also hardly any fall out because they are so smooth, meaning you can happily apply your face makeup before doing your eyes without having to worry about an industrial size cleanup. They are super pigmented so you don’t have to use heaps but they aren’t hard to blend out at all which really surprised me when I saw how much shadow I picked up on my brush the first time I used the palette! The highlighters have the exact same, creamy formula too and are a delight to use! There are five matte and five shimmery shades – perfect! A lot of our other palettes tend to be either mostly matte or mostly shimmer so I love that this is perfectly centred! The shimmer shades also aren’t chunky or glittery at all which is always a winner in my books!

 Colour Range:

What I love about this palette is the really catered for a lot of different skin tones, especially with the highlighters! They somehow managed to make four highlighters have the perfect shade range for super light to deep, dark skin tones! The eyeshadows also have a great range of matte transition shades meaning that you will pretty much find your crease shade no matter what skin shade you are.

 Longevity:

This is where things get exciting! I have pretty oily eyelids and my eyeshadows tend to get those gross sweaty blank lines within a few hours normally, especially if I don’t prime my eyes! During my move to Sydney I packed only this palette and completely forgot to pack a primer. I didn’t even know if it was worth wearing the shadows but was going out for breakkie with my cousin one morning at 7am and wanted to look pretty. The next time I looked at my self in the mirror that day was around 8pm (so I had been wearing them for at least 12.5 hours) and MY EYES STILL LOOKED INCREDIBLE! Like I’m talking, freshly applied amazing. These eyeshadows, even though they are super creamy, somehow stay on for hours and hours – probably days if you left them! Winner winner chicken dinner!

 Packaging:

The packaging is definitely a winner for me! Yes it’s big but it’s got 14 powder products in it so that doesn’t bother me! What I love so much is how slim it is! It fits in my toiletry bag so easily even though the actual size of the palette is one of my biggest!

Overall thoughts:

As you can probably tell I absolute love this palette! N and I are actually going to buy another one each for backups haha. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on the market for eyeshadows or highlighters or generally is alive. Buy it now, thank me later.

Stay Happy,

Makeup Look: MAC Winter Makeup – ft. Viva Glam Ariana Grande Lipstick

Winter has definitely sunk in so it’s time to stack on our big wooly scarves, coats and gloves, but by far our favourite winter accessory is a bold, dark lip. When I saw the MAC Viva Glam Ariana lipstick at our local MAC counter I knew I had to have it! Luckily enough I still had a Myer voucher from Christmas so I also picked up their Tan pigment that I have been dying over ever since I started getting in to makeup!

So let’s jump straight in to the BASE! My MAC foundations are some of my all time favourites! You’ve heard us rave about our Face and Body foundations way too many times but if I want a bit more coverage I always pick up my Studio Fix Fluid (my colour is NC15, pale girls unite) and today, to make sure my base was perfect, I used the peach shade from my Studio Finish Concealer Duo (shade NW20/NC25) on my dark under-eye circles and the yellow shade on any spots. Then to brighten under my eyes I blended  a little bit of my Select Cover-Up Concealer (shade NW15). My secret for a flawless finish is buffing MAC’s Mineralise Foundation/Loose (shade light) all over my face. The mineralise formula blurs out any imperfections and seriously leaves your skin looking flawless!

Next up is BLUSH, BRONZER AND HIGHLIGHTFirst I used my all-time favourite MAC 135 brush to buff my Matte Bronze bronzer over the low points of the face (under the cheek bones, under the jaw line, along the hair line on the forward and through the temples) to act as a bit of a contour and also just to warm up my face a little. Then I used my favourite MAC blush, Style, along my cheek bones to add a bit of colour and topped it all off with one of my favourite highlighters, Soft and Gentle, along the high points of my face (at top of the cheek bones, along the bridge of the nose, on the brow bone, on my cupid’s bow and on the tip of the nose) to get that glow and give my face dimension.

CONTOURBRONZEBLUSH_Fotor_Fotor_Collage

Now for EYEBROWS. MAC makes my two absolute favourite brow products, the Veluxe Brow Liner (shade Brunette) and Brow Set (shade Beguile). This is honestly the best combination of brow products to make them full of volume and nice and defined! Plus they are super easy to use on the go! 10/10!

BROWS_Fotor_Fotor_Collage

Now for my favourite part, the EYES. Before putting any shadows on my eyes I used the 24-Hour Extend Eye Base to make stop creasing and prolong the wear of the shadows. Then I set that with the Mineralise powder foundation. To define my crease I blended shade Wedge from the Sophisticate Look in a Box Face Kit through my crease and also under my eye to give it a bit more definition. Then, I used the Tan pigment on my 233 (a small flat shader brush) on my mobile lid. To intensify a bit more I wet my brush with a bit of Fix+ and dipped it in to the pigment and then packed it on my lid. This also gave it a beautiful metallic look. To highlight my inner corners I used Mac’s Electric Cool Eyeshadow (shade Gilded Thrill) Mascara is the one makeup product I don’t own from Mac (mostly because I’m not sure which one to get – do you have any suggestions?) so instead I used my favourite, Benefit’s They’re Real mascara in Beyond Black. And that’s it for eyes, it’s that simple. I wanted this look to be wearable during the day so didn’t add false lashes but you definitely could if you wanted to wear it on a night out!

Finally for the star of the show, the LIPS! To line my lips I used my Revlon ColourStay Lipliner (shade wine) all over my lips to define them and create an even base for the Viva Glam Ariana Grande lipstick!

Top it all off with a few sprays of Fix+ and that’s it lovelies! What do you think? Do you think you’ll be rocking this look this winter?

Stay happy,

-M xx
