REVIEW: SuperStay 24hr Foundation and Concealer by Maybelline

Everybody and their dog is after foundation and concealer that will keep you looking fresh af from dawn til dusk (or dusk til dawn, if that’s how you roll), so when I came across the Maybelline’s SuperStay 24hr foundation and concealer I had to see if this would end that search.  I’m not sure I’ve ever needed my makeup to last a full 24 hours but the idea that it could if I really wanted it to caught my eye.

Maybelline tells us that the foundation uses “micro-flex technology” (which is 100% a term they made) that helps the product to resist movement throughout the day and,  I would imagine they are implying, help it to last 24 hours.  So did they live up to my lofty expectations? Read on to find out.

THE PACKAGING

I actually quite like the packaging! Whilst the hefty glass bottle of the foundation makes it impractical for travel, it looks sleek and feels of expensive quality. The foundation also comes with a pump, always a huge tick.  The concealer tube is neither here nor there, it’s fine.

As for the labels, something that irritates me about drugstore products is that the labels/writing often wear away from rattling around it my makeup bag or foundation draw.  I have had both of these for quite a while and the labels still look brand new! It’s something small, but I appreciate it.

THE PRICE

This foundation will set you back AU$24.95 for 30mL, and the concealer AU$14.95 for 7.5mL which is by no means the cheapest drugstore foundation on the market.  It is still, however, a far cry from high-end or luxury foundation prices.

THE FINISH

The finish is somewhere between matter and satin, I guess you could call it a “natural” finish, with medium but buildable coverage.  This means you can wear it for every day or amp it up for night time or big events. The concealer is leaning more towards full coverage.

However, this is where the product really lost points for me.  No matter how I applied this it left my skin looking heavy and cakey.

One application with a drop of oil (the best way I found to apply it…still not crazy about it)

The concealer in particular left my under-eyes looking really seriously atrocious.  And it got worse over time! Even when I thought I’d thinned it out with some facial oil and it looked okay initally, it somehow ended up looking like a dry, creased and cakey mess a few hours later.  I was always desperate to take it off when I looked in a mirror and regretted wearing it every single time.

The foundation was pretty similar. Whilst the finish was improved by adding a drop of facial oil, it still looked cakey after a few hours wear.  I tried applying it with my hands, with a beauty sponge, with a brush, with and without a drop of oil, with a finishing spray and without; no matter what I did it just didn’t sit well on my skin.

I do have dry-combination skin, so this may have played a part in this.  If you have oily skin this may work in your favour!

With a full face of makeup – no setting powder as that makes it cake up even more

THE WEAR

The concealer really did last all day long without any movement or diminishing in coverage.  However, as I mentioned for every single one of those hours, it looked cakey and hideous and I was desperate to get home and take it off.  I particularly remember looking in the mirror after work one day and being mortified that I had been walking around looking like a pale, old lady all day.  The creasing was the worst I have ever experienced.

The foundation didn’t last as well as the concealer, but it also wasn’t as cakey as the concealer.  Which says more about how shockingly cakey the concealer was than the finish of the foundation, because it was still pretty heavy.  It ended up leaving my skin looking dull and unhealthy, which is the total opposite of what I was hoping to get from this “24hr fresh look” foundation.

the verdict

Huge, massive thumbs down from me.  I have honestly been avoiding doing this review because I don’t want to put this foundation back on my skin for photos. I just can’t even.  This may be the worst foundation and concealer I have ever used.  I know that sounds super negative and dramatic but that’s how shitty I looked at the end of the day when I wore these. I would honestly prefer my makeup to fade than leave me looking like a cake face as this did.

If you have oily skin, perhaps this won’t be an issue for you. But honestly, I wouldn’t risk it.

Have you tried these products? What were your thoughts? Can you recommend any other long-wearing foundations?

Full Face of AUSTRALIS First Impressions

Australis is a home grown Aussie brand that has affordable makeup in all areas from lips to eyes and face! I recently went a bit ham on some of their products and thought I would do a full face of first impressions so we can try them out together!

Foundation:

For foundation I got the Fresh &Flawless Foundation in Natural Fawn. It’s a medium-full coverage foundation with matte finish which I quite like for nights out as it is mostly a bit longer wearing that dewy foundations. First off, the colour was a great match and the coverage was a nice medium coverage so some of my freckles still pocked through and I didn’t look like a cake face. It applied really evenly with a Flat Top Kabuki Brush and built really nicely when I applied a second layer around my nose and cheeks where I generally need a bit more coverage! A+ from me!

Concealer:

14328909_10154102200422955_1334101216_n

To highlight down the centre of my face and under my eyes I used the Concealer Stick in Light. It has great coverage and blended so easily (again with a Flat Top Kabuki Brush)! You could definitely use a different shade if you needed to cover any blemishes but I found that the foundation did that for me!

Setting Powder:

14328893_10154102200457955_1236985813_n

To set the areas I had concealed I used the banana shade from the Take Me On Tour Contouring & Highlighting Kit. I can’t find the kit on the website but I would look in store in Kmart or Priceline to see if they have any available. Otherwise they do have a Banana Powder  that I believe is the same product in a single format. This is one of the silkiest banana powders I have used! It’s so buttery and doesn’t leave your face looking super dry! I definitely recommend this!

Brows:

14287578_10154102200652955_1728216630_n

For brows I used the Tint my Brow in Light Brown. I have heard so much about this brow gel but for some reason never got around to trying it out! It applied really nicely and the colour match was great! It isn’t my favourite tinted brow gel but for the price I think it’s a great starter for those that are new to makeup!

Cheeks:

14331553_10154102200767955_1290119897_n

To sculpt my face I used the contour and highlight shade from the same Take Me On Tour Contouring and Highlighting Kit and OH MY GOODNESS… I AM IN LOVE! This whole palette is absolutely incredible! Australis – if this is discontinued pleeaassee make it permanent! Everybody needs this in their life! Like the banana shade they are sooo buttery and smooth and look amazing on the skin! Stunning! I found this highlight on their website but hopefully the kit is still in Priceline or Kmart! You need this kit! Run,don’t walk!

Eyes:

14329053_10154102200772955_1214237573_n

To sculpt my socket I used the contour shader from the palette and then used the Eyeliner Pencil in Blackest Black to create some depth in the outer corner of my top lid and lower lash line! This was so easy to blend out with a blending brush and super easy to apply! Then I used the Metallix Cream Eyeshadow in Pearl Jammin’  on the inner two thirds of my lid to add some sparkle! I found this a little bit tricky to apply as it broke up a little especially when I tried to blend it but I’m sure once I get the technique right it will be easy and I definitely want to keep trying as it looked so amazing on! Do any of you own these eyeshadows? What’s your favourite way to apply them? After highlighting my brow bone with the same highlighter I used before I finished off my eyes with the Fierce Eyes Volumising Mascara which is INCREDIBLE! It’s super black and made my eyelashes look so long and full – I’ll definitely keep using it!

Lips:

14331109_10154102200877955_1809583446_n

For lips, I decided to go nude and used their Colour Inject Moisturising Mineral Lipstick in shade Mambo all over my lips! The formula was so creamy and beautiful on the lips, I am for sure going to stock up on some other shades.

So there you have it – my thoughts on some Australis products! All in all I was super impressed with the products I tried and will definitely be trying more from their brand! What is your favourite Australis product? What should I try next?

Stay Happy,

Review: BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel Eyeshadow and Highlighter palette.

My beautiful sister, N got me the BH Cosmetics X Carli Bybel 14 Colour Eyeshadow and Highlighter Palette for my birthday in June so I thought I would put it to the test and let you all know what I think about it. So, without further ado, here are my thoughts on the palette.

Price:

This palette is so afordable! It costs $14.50USD and you get 10 eyeshadows and 4 highlighters! You do have to pay for shipping but I think all up it cost N around $20… Winner!

Formulation:

Hooly dooly, these are probably the most highly pigmented, buttery and smooth eyeshadows I own aside from my three Makeup Forever shadows! They seriously feel like powdery butter! There’s also hardly any fall out because they are so smooth, meaning you can happily apply your face makeup before doing your eyes without having to worry about an industrial size cleanup. They are super pigmented so you don’t have to use heaps but they aren’t hard to blend out at all which really surprised me when I saw how much shadow I picked up on my brush the first time I used the palette! The highlighters have the exact same, creamy formula too and are a delight to use! There are five matte and five shimmery shades – perfect! A lot of our other palettes tend to be either mostly matte or mostly shimmer so I love that this is perfectly centred! The shimmer shades also aren’t chunky or glittery at all which is always a winner in my books!

 Colour Range:

What I love about this palette is the really catered for a lot of different skin tones, especially with the highlighters! They somehow managed to make four highlighters have the perfect shade range for super light to deep, dark skin tones! The eyeshadows also have a great range of matte transition shades meaning that you will pretty much find your crease shade no matter what skin shade you are.

 Longevity:

This is where things get exciting! I have pretty oily eyelids and my eyeshadows tend to get those gross sweaty blank lines within a few hours normally, especially if I don’t prime my eyes! During my move to Sydney I packed only this palette and completely forgot to pack a primer. I didn’t even know if it was worth wearing the shadows but was going out for breakkie with my cousin one morning at 7am and wanted to look pretty. The next time I looked at my self in the mirror that day was around 8pm (so I had been wearing them for at least 12.5 hours) and MY EYES STILL LOOKED INCREDIBLE! Like I’m talking, freshly applied amazing. These eyeshadows, even though they are super creamy, somehow stay on for hours and hours – probably days if you left them! Winner winner chicken dinner!

 Packaging:

The packaging is definitely a winner for me! Yes it’s big but it’s got 14 powder products in it so that doesn’t bother me! What I love so much is how slim it is! It fits in my toiletry bag so easily even though the actual size of the palette is one of my biggest!

Overall thoughts:

As you can probably tell I absolute love this palette! N and I are actually going to buy another one each for backups haha. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on the market for eyeshadows or highlighters or generally is alive. Buy it now, thank me later.

Stay Happy,

Review & Swatches: Shanghai Suzy Lipsticks

I am a lover of lipstick. So when I started to hear great things about the lipstick brand Shanghai Suzy I, of course, gave it a quick Google to see what the fuss was about. Not gonna lie, I assumed this was a Chinese brand from the name, but it turns out it’s a local Australian brand. The lipstick-only brand was created to fill the hole in the market for good quality yet affordable lipsticks, and they nailed it.

DSC06171

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Shanghai Suzy lipsticks, but it just went ahead and blew my mind. For starters, they are AU$12.95. So, naturally, my plan of buying just one to try the formula out quickly turned into a little trio of first impressions.

The formula? Fabulous. They are so creamy, and yet not heavy on the lips, and they last. Like not last as in do-nothing-all-day-like-don’t-even-chew-gum and it lasts, but like really lasts. I gave these guys a workout, I even wore one out to Mexican one night and it still looked respectable after a night of having shoved tacos/burritos/cocktails in my gob. It had faded slightly, but this was almost unnoticeable and it had done it well. Nothing annoys me more with a lipstick than when you go to the bathroom and you have nothing left but a lip liner-esque ring around your lips; that didn’t happen with these lipsticks.

As mentioned earlier, I picked up three colours. They are all name ‘Miss somethingoranother” which I think is just adorable. The three I own are Miss Bree (Pink Blush), Miss Sanja (Fuschia) and Miss Victorine (Classic Red). I will say one thing though, it’s not necessarily a negative, it’s just a note. All three of my lipsticks are the ‘matte formula’…they ain’t matte. They aren’t shimmery, or frosted or anything like that at all, but they are also not matte. That doesn’t bother me, but if you are after a MAC style matte lipstick, these are not for you.

On to swatches…

L-R: Miss Victorine, Miss Sanja, Miss Bree

Miss Bree – Pink Blush

A cute pink that can go from every day to blushing night-time beauty.

Miss Sanja – Fuschia

A gorgeous almost-purple. This is probably the one I wear most often, it finished off any outfit perfectly.

Miss Victorine – Classic Red

I’m going to make a bold statement; this is a pretty good dupe for MAC’s Ruby Woo. I love Ruby Woo, and (as I mentioned) this is nowhere near as matte, but to be honest I think that may be in Miss Victorine’s favour! This is just a gorgeous, classic red. A must have in any girls lipstick collection.

All in all I am a huge fan and will definitely be purchasing more and getting them as gifts for friends and family. Miss Tanielle (Desert Rose) is next on my list.

Do you have any lipstick brand recommendations for me to try? Let me know in the comments below.
